Week 9 weigh in

Well again..nothing exciting to report. One more pound. Current weight: 153. Total weight loss: 16 lbs.
A lot of folks in my facebook support group are seeing a lot higher numbers. I am continuing to exercize and watch my food intake and that is all on track. I will just keep hanging in there!!

Week 8 Weigh-in

Hi everyone,
Not much to report this week. I am down just 1lb weighing in at 154, which is a total weight loss of 15 lbs since I began. It is frustrating that things are moving slow but I don't really know how to speed things up. I am exercising and watching more of what I eat. I guess I will just keep plugging along.

I missed a couple of days of Nexium which brought the heartburn back, so I need to be more diligent! I took a pill this morning so I'm guessing in a couple of days the heartburn will subside.

Could not go a walk last night and can't tonight due to after work events but will get back with that Thursday.

And that is all I have for this week! I hope to have a better report next Wednesday!

Week 7 Weigh in

Sorry I missed a couple of weeks with the Wednesday weigh ins! Life has been so busy. Two weekends out of town and a daughter that just started her senior year of high school has kept me focused elsewhere.

So the weight loss has slowed down. Boo! Current weight is 155 which is only 3 lbs since my last official weigh in. I want this to go faster! But....I will take what I can get. At least things are still moving in the right directions. I have been walking a lot too..about 20 miles per week and I thought that would speed things up. Guess I was wrong :(

On the plus side, though...only 6 more lbs to get under 150. I have not been watching calories too closely but I really don't eat very much as I am just not that hungry. I will try to pay more attention this coming week.

Another good thing is that I don't get nauseous anymore! The heartburn, though, got to a point of ridiculous and I finally broke down and bought some Nexium last week. That seems to have done the trick and the heartburn is almost unnoticeable!

I am still plugging along and will be more diligent about the eating thing. I am almost to the point where I can start running again. I just don't feel comfortable running when so heavy but have told myself when I hit 150...that's it. Back to it.

Hope everyone is doing well! See you next week!

Week 4 Weigh-In

Happy Wednesday everyone! It's that time again. Today's weigh-in was 158. So 2 lbs lost again this week for a total of 11 lbs since I started. I am just happy to be out of the 160's but of course I wish I was losing faster.

This past week of the 2.4 dose went fairly well. I had no nausea issues until this past Monday where I felt really sick an hour after my shot and threw up a few times. That is the only time I have vomited. I'm not sure if it was the medicine or something else, but I seemed to get over it quickly.  I have still had the heart-burn but it has not been as bad as in the past.

Today I started with the 3.0 dose (the highest I will get to). I'm hoping I won't have any trouble. I have also added in exercize this past week, taking a 3 to 4 mile walk every night after work and doing some weight training twice per week. Hoping that will speed things along a bit.

I hope everyone is doing great!

Week 3 Weigh In

Hi Everyone! Happy Wednesday. Here we are again at weigh in day for me. I only lost another 2 lbs this week and I have to say I am quite disappointed that it was not more. I feel like I am hardly eating anything and I have started back to exercize as well. I was really hoping to be out of the 160's by now! I wish the weight loss would go quicker...LOL! But, alas, I will take what I can get, right?
Here are this week's stats:

Today's weight:  160
Weight loss this week: 2 lbs
Total weight loss: 9 lbs

Today I started on dose 2.4 mg so we will see what it brings! This past week, I had pretty bad nausea and heartburn again for the first 3 days of the 1.8. But by the weekend that had disappeared. I did seem to have a headache almost every day also and I'm not sure if that was due to the medicine or if it was caused by some other kind of stress (i.e. work).  Trying to keep my head up and spirits high. After all, 2 lbs is 2lbs.

Week 2 Weigh In

Hi everyone!
Today is week 2 weigh in day. I really hate stepping on the scale!! At any rate, I did it and although I did not lose as much as last week, it's still a loss. Today's stats:

Current weight: 162
Weight lost this week: 2 lbs
Overall weight loss: 7lbs

I'll take it! I did take in a lot of salt yesterday so maybe that has something to do with the small loss. I went to dinner with some old friends last night. I ate a black bean burger with no bun and a couple of fries..oh yeah..and 2 glasses of wine.

All in all I can't be too disappointed. Excited to see what the new week brings! Today I started on the 1.8 mg dose so I am bracing myself for nausea, which seems to ensue each time I up my dose. I plan to start back on an exercize plan starting Saturday (August 1st..a new month) so maybe that will speed up my weight loss some.

I'll check back in  in a few days.
Cheers!

Day 12

Well I seem to be past the nausea of the 1.2 mg dose of Saxenda, but this heartburn is relentless. It is always worse after I eat and is also worse in the evenings.  I have not taken anything for it, but I'm going to have to. I also have some acid reflux that tends to come and go.

Another thing I have noticed (and so have many of the folks in my support group) is that I have to eat very slowly or I'll feel sick. This afternoon my boyfriend grilled out burgers and we also made corn on the cob. I got about halfway through the corn and had a few bites of a plain burger (no bun) before I had to just quit. I had no desire to continue eating, I felt full and just the mere thought of eating more made my stomach turn. I have found that some things I loved to eat before starting this medicine have completely lost their appeal. I am not complaining, just find it interesting....

My daughter told me I looked thinner...but she may have just been trying to butter me up, as I took her shopping over the weekend..LOL.  The one place I have noticed some weightloss is in my boobs. Typical for women, I guess. I wish it would come off my middle first!!

Hope everyone has a great start to the week. I'll be back on Wednesday with a weigh in post.

Day 9

Yesterday morning I started on the new dose of 1.2 mg and by the afternoon my nausea and heartburn returned with a vengeance. I haven't had heartburn like that since I was 9 months pregnant! I was feeling pretty crappy so went to lay down about 8pm. The heartburn was so bad that I was awake until close to midnight. This morning I felt a little better, but not long after my injection I started feeling crappy again. All I can get down is plain cheerios and even that is a struggle. Can't wait for this work day to end so I can lay down. Hoping my body adjusts to this new dose soon!!

Week 1 Weigh-In

I was a bit anxious this morning, as I knew I had to step on that nasty scale, but it had to be done.
Much to my surprise, I have lost 5 lbs this week!! Saxenda is working!!! Can you say party??
I'm sure I won't lose 5 lbs every week but this was a nice start!

Current weight: 164 lbs.

Here is what I experienced my first week:

I was nauseous for about 4 -5 days and hard horrible heartburn if I ate anything. I never felt hungry until last night (day 7) and I think that is just because my body has gotten used to the 0.6 mg dose. I was good last night, though, and just went to bed when I thought about eating something awful..lol!
The nausea and heartburn went away the last couple of days...again, its probably because my body is used to the low dose.  Today I upped my dose to 1.2 mg and will stay here until next Wednesday when I up it again. I ate a few handfuls of cheerios for breakfast just to get something in my stomach but have not been hungry at all. I made myself some BBQ for lunch (just the meat, no bun) and was only able to eat about 3 bites before I felt full and threw the rest out.
I am excited to see what this next brings!!!!
Cheers!

Starting a new weightloss journey

This past Wednesday (July 15, 2015) I started a weight loss journey with a relatively new medication called Saxenda. I am excited, hopeful and a bit apprehensive about how it will work for me. Since Saxenda is new, there is not much information out there about real-life experience so I started this blog to track my progress (or lack thereof). I hope my experience can provide information to those that are also on this journey and for those considering jumping on board!

What is Saxenda?
Saxenda is the fourth drug for weight loss approved by the FDA since 2012. It's already available in a lower dose as Victoza for type 2 diabetes.
Researchers began to study it as an obesity  treatment after people on Victoza reported weight loss. Saxenda, like Victoza, is injected daily. It's approved for people with a body mass index (BMI) of 30, considered obese, or a BMI of 27 with weight-related conditions such as high blood pressure. Saxenda was approved by the FDA in December, 2014. You can find more information here: Saxenda

How does it work?
Saxenda mimics a hormone made in the intestines called GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide).
One role of GLP-1 is to tell your brain you’re full. This medicine works in many ways to help beta cells normalize blood sugars. Beat cells make and release insulin when blood sugar is high. They help those with type 2 diabetes keep their blood sugar normal.

How well does Saxenda work?
Clinical trials of Saxenda continued for about a year and included about 4,800 patients, with some getting the drug and some a placebo.
Clinical trials show that more than 60% of patients getting a daily 3-milligram injection lost at least 5% of their weight and 31% lost more than 10%.

What are the side effects?
With any medication, there can be side effects and Saxenda is not to be excluded. The most common are nausea, diarrhea, heartburn and vomiting. There can be more serious side effects which you can read about here: Saxenda side effects

My Story
I am a 48 year old female, mom of two and employed full time. I have always been active and really never had much of a weight problem other than a few pudgy teenage years and two pregnancies. I gained 50 lbs with each baby but was able to get the weight off fairly quickly. I usually hovered around 120 lbs. In my mid thirties I picked up running as a hobby and could eat almost anything I wanted without gaining. Things started to change around the age of 42. Weight was gradually creeping up and I hard a very hard time losing (I was still running at this time also).  I  ranged between 132-142 until 2 or 3 years ago. This past year I gained 30 lbs and had no clue why. I was still running ( 13 half marathons last year ) and trying to cut calories. The weight would not come off. My last half marathon was in April 2015. I decided to take a break from running for awhile, as I had many people tell me that maybe I was exercising too much; maybe my body was so used to all the exercise that I couldn't lose anymore. I was at a standstill and really didn't know what to do. People love to give advice and I was open to anything. I should also mention that I am not yet menopausal.   I had a year physical this past May and my Dr. just said to "exercise and eat better" (which was very frustrating, as I was already doing that). All my lab work came back normal other than a Vitamin D deficiency. I asked her to prescribe something for weight loss but she refused, just telling me to " see a nutritionist".  Not long after my appointment, one of my cousins told me she had just been diagnosed with a thyroid disorder called Hashimoto's Disease. I called my Dr. to tell her that I now have family history and maybe this was my issue but she just brushed me aside, telling me that my thyroid tests were normal.  My cousin encouraged me to see an endocrinologist as there were more extensive thyroid tests that should be done. I made an appointment as soon as I could and felt relieved that this Dr. really listened to me and didn't rush me out of the examination room. He ran a full thyroid panel as well as adrenal tests. The thyroid tests were all normal, but my adrenal tests showed I had a very high cortisol level ( about 8 times higher than a normal person). He told me that high cortisol levels can cause weight gain. Next he tested me for Cushing's Disease. When that came back negative I was almost disappointed. Not that I wanted to have a disease, but I wanted a reason as to what was going on with me. If nothing was wrong, then why were my cortisol levels so high??  My Dr. said it was stress. Funny thing was (and is) that I didn't feel stressed. I am in a great relationship, my kids are doing excellent and I have a great job. Money is tight, but not to the point where I can't pay my bills. He suggested that I give Saxenda a try, so here I am. Hoping and praying that this stuff works!  He gave me a sample pack and called in a prescription to my pharmacy.

Pictured above is my Saxenda pen. You take off the cap and attach a small needle. Your first week, you give yourself a daily injection of 0.6 mg. There is a dial type mechanism on the right where you can adjust your dose. Week two you go up to 1.2 mg, week three: 1.8, week four: 2.4, and week five: 3.0 mg. You stay at 3.0 for remainder of the time you take the medicine. My Doctor gave me a one year prescription.
The injections do not hurt! You inject your dose in the fat of your abdomen or under arm and it's subcutaneous. This kind of reminds me of an epi-pen.
Some people have a hard time getting insurance to approve Saxenda. Fortunately for me, that was not the case. According to my Dr., Blue Cross, Blue Shield is one of the insurance companies that approves it easily. My sample pen should last me about 17 days before I have to delve into my prescription.

As I mentioned at the beginning of my post, there is just not much information available about the "real people" that are taking this drug. Once prescribed, I went on google to see if I could find any testimonials or stories and I only came across one. A lovely lady named Eliza has started a YouTube video diary about her experience. Here is a link to her first video:

I contacted her and she told me about a Saxenda support group on Facebook, so I joined up right away. You can reach them here:

They are a wonderful and supportive group of people! If you are taking Saxenda, please reach out!

I will post a weigh in each Wednesday and list any side effects I may be experiencing throughout the week. Please feel free to comment, ask questions and give feedback!!

Here are my stats:
Height: 5' 3 3/4
Weight 169

Thanks everyone!
